Crafter’s Companion x Project Linus
This giveaway is to help promote the amazing Project Linus charity initiative. Project Linus is a volunteer organisation which encourages people to make and donate patchwork quilts and knitted/crocheted blankets. These handmade blankets are then given to sick and traumatised babies, children and teenagers across the UK. This is all done with the simple aim of providing them with a sense of security and comfort, when they need it most. How great is that?
Crafter’s Companion has partnered with Project Linus to run a ‘Quilt-along’ series in its magazine Sew Inspired. There will be four parts to the series, each one teaching readers various elements of quilt making. By the end of the series, readers will have made an entire quilt – ready to be donated to Project Linus.
So how does Project Linus work?
Once a volunteer has made a quilt, they give it to their local coordinator (there are 130 around the country) who sews a label on the back and logs it in. Each coordinator gives the quilt a number, records who gave it to them and which organisation or institution has received the quilt. This then allows them to pass on any letters of thanks from the recipient, to the volunteer who made it.
Coordinators then take the quilts to children’s hospitals, women’s refuges, hospices, foster homes, homeless families and those disadvantaged in other ways. This simple gift can give a much-needed feeling of comfort and a sense of security.
How can you get involved?
Donating a quilt or blanket is definitely the best way to get involved. Your creation can be as simple or complex as you like. There’s plenty of tips on the Project Linus website, along with details of how to contact your local coordinator for donations.
This is a great project for newbie quilters, so don’t be shy if you’ve never tried it before. Be sure to check out my essential tips for making a quilted blanket, which should help you out.
