I’m starting a new tag on the blog today – 15 minute DIY! (If you don’t know what a tag is, it’s just a way to group together similar blog articles and content via a clickable link attached to each relevant blog post. You can see the tags on a post at the very end.). I’ll use this new tag to group together all of the simple and quick DIY tutorials I share on my blog – because sometimes all you want is a quick craft fix, rather than a more complex project!
So, enough chit-chat… what’s my first 15 minute DIY? Handmade leather drinks coasters!
I got the idea for using leather to make drinks coasters when I visited Copenhagen last autumn. I found a cool little store selling some really amazing Scandi-style home decor items, including a stash of leather coasters. Whilst I was tempted to buy them (although they were NOT cheap!), I knew I could DIY them instead. 🙂 Fast-forward a few months and I finally got around to it!
Handmade leather drinks coasters
- Leather scraps
- Marker pen
- Something circular to use as a template
- Sharp craft knife or scissors
This is an easy one! Simply draw a circle onto the back of a piece of leather, making sure the circle is large enough for your mugs, then cut it out with sharp scissors or a craft knife. It’s a good idea to then add a thin coat of waterproofing leather polish to the coasters, although this isn’t a necessity.
Simple, right?! I love the blue dotty leather I used for my coasters (I found it in a bag of off-cuts at my local haberdashery), but you could of course use any leather you want. You’d be surprised at how many different colours you can choose from! Also, if circular coasters aren’t your thing, you could mix it up with some geometric shapes – I reckon squares or hexagons would look pretty good! It’s so quick to make these leather coasters, so just have fun and try a few different designs 🙂 – Mike.
