I’ve gotta confess: I don’t like lattes. Sorry latte lovers! I just find them too sweet, especially if they’re flavoured, and I’m not a fan of the frothed milk that’s poured on top either. So I often feel like I’m missing out at this time of year, when everyone’s flocking to their nearest Starbucks to get the ubiquitous pumpkin spice latte. I’ve tried it, and it’s not for me I’m afraid.
Instead, I thought I’d take inspiration from the flavours of the pumpkin spice latte and create a much healthier version: the pumpkin spice smoothie! It’s both refreshing and comforting, with a real kick of autumnal spice. I like this version so much more than the latte! Check out my recipe below.
Pumpkin Spice Smoothie Recipe
Ingredients (serves 1)
- 1 large carrot
- 1 large orange
- 1/2 a lime
- 1 small piece of ginger (about the size of an ice cube)
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder (not pictured)
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg powder (not pictured)
- Several ice cubes
Peel the carrot and ginger, then chop them into small chunks or slices. Peel the orange, then add it to an electric blender or smoothie maker along with the carrot and ginger. Add the cinnamon, nutmeg, the juice of 1/2 a lime and a few ice cubes. Blend on high until you have your desired consistency (I like mine with some texture, but you could blend until it becomes a smooth juice if you prefer – just add a splash of water if it’s a bit thick). Adjust the flavour with more ginger/cinnamon/nutmeg, if you want a stronger pumpkin spice kick. When you’ve got the ideal flavour, serve and drink immediately.
Since Halloween is just around the corner, I used a Sharpie to doodle a scary face on the side of my pumpkin spice smoothie. Give this recipe a go this week; it’s healthier and cheaper, but still tastes incredible. Happy autumn!
