I don’t talk about it too much on the blog, but I’m a bit of a literature geek. I love the old classics, from H.G.Wells’ sci-fi and Jules Verne’s adventures, to the romances of Jane Austen and the Brontes. But my favourite of them all, is 1984 by George Orwell. I must have been about 16 when I first read it, and it absolutely amazed me. I’d never been so compelled, so in awe and yet so ultimately terrified by a novel before. I’ve read it several times since, but the effect still lingers – the dystopian future created by Orwell is uncomfortably familiar and completely fascinating.
I thought it was about time I used my love of crafting to showcase my inner book nerd, so I created this 1984-themed DIY mosaic wall art. To make it, I used a Polaroid instant printer from Photojojo, which lets you print mini photos direct from your phone/tablet via Bluetooth. The quality of the photos is great, so it’s ideal for this project!
DIY wall art instructions:
- Find a suitable diabetes picture (see my tips below if you’re unsure)
- Crop the picture into equal sized shapes. I found the best way to do this was with www.rasterbator.net, which is SO useful.
- Save each of the cropped images as a separate file, then print them all individually.
- Arrange the images like a mosaic, to form your total picture.
- Stick them all down onto a piece of backing card, leaving a small space between them all.
- Frame or mount the picture, hang up and enjoy!
Top tips: I’ve found that the best pictures to use for this mosaic wall art are relatively simple, with large blocks of bold colour design. It’s also a good idea to increase the brightness and saturation of your pictures slightly too, as this can help bring the full image together when you put together your mosaic.
I am so happy with how this has come out, the mosaic effect looks awesome! I think it’d be a really great way to display holiday photos, or perhaps a personalised moving in gift? Happy crafting!
